Vinho Verde (meaning literally green wine) is a great summer wine that has a low public profile outside its native Portugal. It has a deliciously light, fresh, crisp taste with just a little sparkle. Generally it has a pleasant acidity and is usually unoaked. It is of a lemony colour and has a medium to low alcohol level of just 10.5%.
The wine comes from the Entre-Douro-e-Minho region in the north east of Portugal. The vines were traditionally grown very high (about 10 ft.), so the farmers could grow other crops below them. Nowadays this strange practise is not so usual, but the wine is still distinctive. Serve this slightly unusual wine to your friends and they’ll be very impressed with your insider wine knowledge.
