Mention Hungarian wine and the first name to pop up is Tokay or Tokaji. This sweet wine can only be made from six grape varieties, most importantly Furmint, that have been affected by the Botrytis fungus. The grade of sugar content is categorised by a system called Puttonyos. The top Tokay wines can have price tags of hundreds of pounds.

Hungary does however also produce lovely wines and reds from Kekfrankos and Zweigelt. Many of these wines don’t make it to export, but are drunk locally.
